First an apology for not updating in ages. Updating takes time, something I get less and less of…
Second, I’ll begin writing in English here. The people requests English. I give them English.
Third, Springbreak in Mexico:
As you already knew a long time ago, I went to Mexico during the springbreak. And had a blast!
Particurlarly in Mexico City.
Travel mates: Øystein, Arnt, Øyvind (all the way to Mexico City), Fredrik and Ole Jacob (only as far as Playa del Rosarito).
Flew down to San Diego on Friday March 30th together with 5 other Norwegian guys, spent the night there plus half a day. ANSA (Association of Norwegian Students Abroad)-party at night, which was fun. Tried surfing with Øystein and a classmate from Norway who lives study in San Diego, mr. Bjugers. The waves were way to big for beginners, so I never made past the white water. It was still fun, though. I got a pretty good speed on the board.
After surfing we took a trolley (train) to the Mexican border, walked to Mexico (just like entering a theme park :)) and took a taxi to Rosarito Beach.
Playa del Rosarito was dirty and not very exciting. There were mainly drunk American teenagers there, and bothersome Mexican with flutes who tried to pour tequila down your throat. Otherwise they tried to drag you into their bar with 24 hours of boom-boom music. The weather was cold and windy and the water was even colder, so it wasn’t the beach vacation we dreamt of either. We did have fun, though. Played Ultimate Frisbee and beach volleyball with some Americans we met, ran around on the beach alot and even beat England 5-4 in soccer!
In the evenings we usually dove into the jacuzzi at the hotel before dinner and going out later on. They had good food in Rosarito, but it wasn’t much cheaper than in the US.
Unfortunately Ole Jacob injured his knee the first night at Papas & Beer (a beach club kinda) while trying to walk down a stair.
The next day his knee felt really bad, so he and Fredrik went to the doctor. And that’s a really funny story, and TRUE, so read the following passage carefully.
When they arrived the medical office a nurse received them. She put Ole Jacob in a wheelchair and took some x-rays of his knee. He then was laid in a bed while waiting for the doctor to come and examine the x-rays. In the bed beside him laid a man who seemed to be dead, according to Fredrik. The man was white as a sheet and didn’t move a muscle. The only thing indicating the man was still alive was a bag with intravenous given to him through a cable in his arm.
So there they were. In a Mexican hospital-like medical office, with an injured Ole Jacob in one of the hospital beds next to a man whose life condition was unknown.
After a while the nurse again entered the room, walked over to the almost dead man and plugged him off the intravenous. Fredrik and Ole Jacob more or less assumed that the guy now was dead. Not a good first impression of the hospital, one can say.
Suddenly Ole Jacob sees Fredrik’s eyes goes wide open. He’s evidently perplexed, and looking over at the neighbour bed. Ole Jacob in bed gazes worried at Fredrik, wondering: “What the hell’s happening?!”
Fredrik can barely believe his own eyes watching the dead man rising. Yup, the assumed dead man is now sitting in his bed trying to shake dizziness out of his head. He then gets out of bed, puts on a medical coat, walk over to the x-rays of OJ’s knee and begin examining them!
And this is a 100% TRUE story!
The doctor had a solid nap in the land of unconsciousness and some delicious intravenous food for lunch before going back to work as nothing special had happened. Pretty amazing.
I guess those old commercials for Europeiske Travel Insurance weren’t exaggerating much.
On the following Thursday Øyvind, Arnt, Øystein and I flew from Tijuana to Mexico City to spend rest of springbreak there.
Mexico City is a great city with a kind of an European big city atmosphere to it. I like to compare the city with both Berlin and Quito, Ecuador. Despite of it’s enormous size (1479 km^2 and 19,2 million citizens) the city felt much smaller and was really cozy.
As touristy things we did I can mention going to the Pyramides outside the city, floating around in the floating gardens of Xochimilco, taking the Turibus, taking taxis everywhere, taking lots of photos, buying crap.
As non-touristy things we did was, among others(?), going out to the without doubt coolest club in the entire Mexico City: Roots. Where Roger Sanchez himself was DJ’ing! (Anyone ever heard about him??) Unfortunately we were too cool to bring cameras, so I have no photos from that event.
Another thing to add to the positive side of Ciudad de México is that blonde Scandinavian guys get a lot of attention from the beautiful girls there. =) Both young and older girls.
Two funny/odd stories:
Two girls, 8-10 years old, were making faces to me at the Turibus when I wasn’t looking their way, and turning away laughing when I did. Funny the first 15-20 minutes, a bit bothersome the last hour… =)
A girl at a our regular breakfast place asked me if she could take a picture of my nose. My NOSE! The reason was that she was going to get a nose operation next fall, so she was looking for the perfect nose. LOL! I was so perplexed I said “OK” and didn’t know what more to say, ’cause I was on my way to somewhere. I should have tried to talk her away from doing a stupid thing as a nose operation, especially when she already had a cute nose. Anyway, I you ever see a Mexican girl with my nose, say hello from me.
1 pic says more than 1000 words, and I’ve already written too much, so HERE ARE THE PHOTOS!
Check out this movie as well. A glimpse of Xochimilco’s floating gardens. See the chaos, listen to the sounds.
